WHAT IS WINTER IDEATHON?

An Ideathon where Teams come up with new Hybrid-casual game ideas that combine a highly retentive Hypercasual core mechanic, with a Meta that provides good long term retention!

GAME SELECTION CRITERIA

  • D1 Retention > 45%

  • D0 Session Time > 40 mins

  • Life-time Installs > 1m (US installs)

  • Look for opportunities in D7/ D30 retention

  • List of Games: Will be shared from rollic portfolio

    • Teams can also pick ANY hypercasual game with these criteria

WHAT IS IN IT FOR A WINNING TIME?

Get to build the new game from scratch with a team, concept test, and soft launch the game by doing a thorough research. This adds up to bring out a new experience for the entire team.​

PART I - WORKING FOR IDEATHON

CHOOSEN GAME - ATM RUSH

High Concept: ATM rush is a level-based, finite traversal game that aims to collect cash by maneuvering different obstacles. There is an additional idle mech loop on it.

Retention: D1 : 50% | D7 : 16% | D30 : 3%

Methods and Reasoning

  • We filtered the list and took FV3 as a reference

  • D1 retention >= 45% (FV3 is 39-42%). As these are hyper

causal games, 45%+ was taken

  • D7 retention >= 10% (FV3 is 15-16%). So, 10%+ is filtered

FV3 D30 retention is 7-8%, so selected the games for which D30 is <=5%

  • Total 9 games. We divided the games and played through

all the selected games.

THEME/BACKSTORY

“Is being a hero too difficult and boring? Become a supervillain in Heist Rush!  Now hiring passionate supervillains who have drive, honor, and above all style.  Race to the top,  Heist other supervillain’s empires and loot their city treasure, Keep upgrading your buildings, guards, and weapons to retaliate against other supervillains and build your empire all around the world!”

Note: The theme of  Heist/supervillain marries the runner mechanic in the core loop with the Builder & Heist mechanic of the meta loop.




WHY THIS META WAS CHOSEN?

  • Provides Long term aspirations and is different from the usual themes in the market.

  • Strong social elements build a sense of community and motivate players to make their friends play the game.

  • Scalable meta which aligns with the target audience.

  • Has various motivational drivers that appeal to different player archetypes (Social, Expression, Exploration)

BUILD YOUR GANGSTA EMPIRE CITY BY CITY

  • Build cities with the cash collected from the core gameplay. Each city has 5 types of buildings, each building has 5 upgrades. 

  • Every upgrade done will provide one star

  • Once the upgrades are completed in one city,  player can unlock the next city. 

  • As a meta, it’s scalable. The art style can be minimalistic without much detail required. Buildings from Merge City can be reused here.

Guard Compound

Once built, guards can be seen roaming around the city. During heist, guards attack the enemy (as animation)

Weaponry

Once built, starts attacking the enemy during heist mode. (in animation)

Housing Complex/Restaurant/Health Centre

The cosmetic building needed to complete the player’s city.

HEIST OTHER CITIES - A FRESH TAKE ON LOOTING (COIN MASTER)

  • Heist tokens are lost if the player loses the level. 

  • The number of tokens collected gets added cumulatively to counter

  • Eligibility for Heist/Revenge → 

  1.  The player needs 3 Tokens to Heist an opponent/take revenge 

  2.  If the Heist token counter reaches 3 during a run, then post the level completion, player will be                   taken to the opponent’s city for a Heist 

  • Opponent matchmaking → 

  1. Total stars of the Player are calculated (each upgrade = 1 star)                   

  2. Match-making happens with opponents who are at +15* to -15 of the player’s total stars 

  3. Also, the opponent should have minimum of 3 upgrades (or 3 stars) in the current city

  • Player can heist any friend (connected through Facebook), irrespective of their star level

From Sensor Tower, games that overlap with ATM Rush are male-centric, shooting/runner games. 
Note: Pirate King and Coin Master have similar meta loops of build/raid but since the theme of the game is different, hence the male: female target audience ratio differs. This validates that the meta loop of Coin Master will work well with the ATM rush audience.

CONCLUSION

Heist Rush won the first prize in the ideathon and was considered a promising project that can be developed in production. Soon later in a month we decided to go ahead with this project to be part of one of our new projects and got developed.
